Career Fair Video

1000 engineering students from UCSD's Jacobs School jammed the Price Center on Feb 22to talk to potential employers at DECaF -- the largest student-run engineering career fair on the West coast.

Among the 90 companies recruiting companies was Walt Disney Imagineering. One of the recruiters was Joel Payne, a Jacobs School alum who was hired at this same fair back in 2002. At Disney, Payne is at work on a new roller coaster.

ENSPIRE student outreach event

Above: one of the cool straw desings created by 8th graders at ENSPIRE -- the huge outreach event run by Jacobs School undergrads. They pulled together 200 volunteers!

Ensprire rocked last week. It's a great new addition to National Engineers Week at UC San Diego. The 8th graders had a ton of fun and really got into the design projects and hands-on experiments. The good energy was infectious.

Engineers Games Video

Check out the 2 minute Engineers Games video from UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering.

Make a Hologram Workshop

As a part of National Engineers Week at UCSD, undergrads have taken it upon themselves to organize an outreach event. They are bringing 400 8th graders to campus today so that the kids can be exposed to life as engineering major. In fact, the busses are on their way right now (and hopefully the rain will hold off!)

One of the activities for the kids is a "Make a Hologram Workshop". You can read more about it on the blog of the student organizers of the event, which is called ENSPIRE.

Tau Beta "Peace" wins Golden Calculator

Tau Beta Pi took home the Golden Calculator trophy at the 2008 Engineering Games at UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering. They won in a run-off after the group tied for first place with the teams from two other engineering organizations.

Engineering Games is Today

The balloon is ready.
The tomatoes are bought.
It's times for the 2nd Annual Engineers Games at UC San Diego to begin!

You can check out more photos of the students blowing up the balloon that will fly 100 feet in the air above Warren Mall here.

You can learn more about E-Games and the rest of National Engineers Week at UCSD here.

The student-run Engineers Games Web site and blog are good places for a glimpse at life as a Jacobs School of Engineering undergraduate student.

Next Week is Engineers Week at UCSD (still!)

Next week is National Engineers Week at UCSD. What makes it so cool is that much of the week is completely organized and executed by students. They are totally in charge of three major campus events: E-Games (engineering design competiton), ENSPIRE (400 8th graders come to campus for a day) and DECaF (huge engineering job fair with more than 90 companies coming to recruit Jacobs School students).
The students have been blogging about all their prep work.
My favorite part of this blogging so far is the description of using mail merge for organizing the career fair. I've pasted an exerpt below. You can read the full post here.
Imagine having 200+ professors that you want to personally email to invite to an event of yours, like the Dining Etiquette Workshop. And you obviously don't want to start out "Dear Professor" because then they'd just write you off as another one of those "generic email writers." What can you do? Mail Merge lets you write and format an email invitation in Microsoft Word, personalize that email to a specific professor that you've listed in Microsoft Excel, and it emails your invitation to every email on that Excel Document through Outlook! Ingenious I know. So you're like "So What? I don't really think professors care that much about having a personalized email, what's the point?" Well imagine having a gazillion industry representatives and recruiters and officials whom you want to email to come to DECaF. Yes, let's just put ALL their emails in one "TO:" box and send it out. Yaknowadimean?
