Faculty researchers share their experiences turning discoveries into marketable products

Four engineering faculty members with technology transfer success stories discussed the challenges of the commercialization process during a March 14 dinner celebrating the 10th anniversary of the von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism and Technology Advancement. The von Liebig Center offers seed funding and advisory services and is part of the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego.

“If we do research and just put it on the shelf to collect dust, we’re not doing our job,” said Frieder Seible, dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering. “We need to transfer our discoveries from the research lab to society.” During the dinner, which was hosted by the UC San Diego Chancellor’s Associates, Seible said the von Liebig Center had transformed the culture of the engineering school, giving students and faculty an entrepreneurial mindset. The Chancellor’s Associates are generous group of alumni, parents and friends who give $2,500 or more each year to be used at the Chancellor's discretion to fund the university's greatest needs.

Stephen Flaim, who is deputy director of the center and one of its several technology and business advisors, talked about the so-called Valley of Death, a gap between the laboratory and the marketplace that can fell even the most promising technology. Lacking funding and a connection with private sector investors and collaborators, researchers can easily get stuck. “There is a gap before the gap,” said Flaim. “That gap is the step from the university out to the private sector. What we did here at the von Liebig Center was figure out a mechanism and an infrastructure that allowed us to make the technologies inside a university recognizable at an earlier stage.”

Read our story about the success stories of UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering professors David Kriegman, computer science and engineering; Rene Cruz, electrical and computer engineering; Sujit Dey, electrical and computer engineering; and Geert Schmid-Schönbein, bioengineering. You can learn more about the cutting edge student research happening in faculty labs, including those of Schmid-Schönbein, Dey and Cruz at Research Expo April 12. From Reseach Expo Best Poster Winner to CEO

Raj Krishnan won best poster at Research Expo in 2009
. Check out the posters for Research Expo 2012.
Raj Krishnan earned his PhD in Bioengineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering in 2010. He recently came back to campus, and the Jacobs School of Engineering, to give a talk at a von Liebig Entrepreneurism Center 10th Anniversary event. Krishnan provided an overview of how we went from graduate student to entrepreneur, and how the von Liebig Center helped in this process. http://www.vonliebig.ucsd.edu/

Rudee Outstanding Poster / Grand Prize / Research Expo

ECE graduate student Chirag Dipak Patel winner of the Rudee Outstanding Poster at Research Expo 2011
Congratulations to ECE graduate student Chirag Dipak Patel, who won top prize at Research Expo 2011.

Poster title and abstract are below. Check back tomorrow for more info on his research.

130. HIGH-POWER, LARGE-FORCE, AND TEMPERATURE-STABLE METAL CONTACT SWITCHES
Student(s): Chirag Dipak Patel
Professor(s): Gabriel Rebeiz

This poster presents a novel electrostatic RF MEMS metal contact switch based on a tethered cantilever topology. The use of tethers results in a design that has low sensitivity to stress gradients, biaxial stresses, and temperature. A switch with a footprint of 160x190 um^2 and based on a 8-u m thick gold cantilever with an Au/Ru contact is implemented on a high-resistivity silicon substrate and results in a total contact force of 0.8-1.2 mN at 80-90 V, a restoring force of 0.5 mN, a pull-in voltage of 61 V, an up-state capacitance of 24 fF, and an actuation time of 6.4 u s. The device achieves a switch resistance of 2.4 +/-1.4 to 1.8+/- 0.6 ohms at 90-100 V in open laboratory environments (unpackaged). This design has the potential serve as a low-cost and high-reliability replacement for conventional electromagnetic relays in application areas such as automated testing equipment, high performance switching networks, medical devices, satellite systems, and defense.

Solar Concentrator Video has approx 1,600 views in 6 days

1600 views for the solar concentrator video...not bad for a technial video...have YOU seen it yet?

I'm not sure where the traffic came from...according to YouTube insight, most of the views have no direct referrer link...meaning that the video spread virally.

Solar Concentrator Video on YouTube

Jason Karp and his solar concentrator have made their way to YouTube. (Today YouTube, tomoroww???)

Want more? Read the academic paper here: http://psilab.ucsd.edu/publications.html

By the way, this is Joseph Ford's lab at the Jacobs School...birthplace of "origami optics"...and the inventor of origami optics, Jason Tremblay earned his PhD and is a postdoc in the Ford lab.

Caption: The new solar concentrator design (right) from UC San Diego collects sunlight with thousands of small lenses imprinted on a common sheet. All these lenses couple into a flat “waveguide” which funnels light to a single photovoltaic cell. Older system designs (left) require many photovoltaic cells which each need to be aligned and electrically connected.

Solar Concentrator Video

Above is a video of Jason Karp talking about the technology that won him top prize at Research Expo 2010.

Check out the list of departmental winners and honorable mentions here.

I'm excited to see what happens with this technology...which Karp et al published earlier this year in Optics Express. (Check out the PDF here).

Update (2:55 pm on April 20): the "post event" site for Research Expo 2010 is live.
